Blu Ray Disc Player

The LG BD300 is the very first blu-ray player ever to incorporate Netflix's new high def streaming service already built into it, ready to buy.  What this means is that if you're signed up under Netflix's "Watch Now" service, then you can stream any tv shows and movies available there right to your player, and watch them at your leisure!  Netflix has been beefing up the selections available through their Watch Now service, too; adding more and more movies, teaming up with partners like Disney and CBS for starters.

Ok, so enough about the cool Netflix incorporation.  What else can this bad boy do?  Well, its a Profile 2.0 player, which means that the main differences between it and Profile 1.0 players are that it has internet connection capabilities (referred to as BD-Live), as well as stores about 4x as much as profile 1.0 players (1GB vs 256MB of storage).

The internet connection capabilities I speak of are stuff like Netflix, which I've already discussed above, but also various online specific extras that are incorporated into blu-ray movies.  At the moment those extra features online haven't been great, but I expect them to grow more and more inpressive as other players get released that support BD-Live.  Oh one more thing to note:  no wifi; you'll have to connect via an ethernet cable.

The image quality on the LG BD300 is pretty much what we've come to expect from newer blu-ray models.  Its clear, crisp, and quite often its downright sexy.  As far as playing older DVDs goes, though, its not that great.  While the image quality looks beautiful for Netflix streaming and standard blu-ray discs, this is not so when converting standard-def DVDs to 1080p.  An inconvenience for people hoping to avoid upgrading all their favorite movies from DVD to Blu-ray.

The menu/navigation is, simply put, a pleasure.  Its full of 5 colorfully simple icons to get you where you need to go:  Netflix Streaming, Photo, Music, Movie, and Setup.  Netflix's streaming menu system fits in quite nicely with this navigation as well, which is great.  While its a relatively straight forward and easy to use interface, you may want to keep the user's manual handy just in case you need any clarification.

In short, LG's BD300 blu-ray disc player is a great hd movie system.  Most especially so if you're down with the Netflix.  In fact, I'd say its almost a must have for any high-def lover who wants to use Netflix's streaming service.

So, starting off our review section here will be the Panasonic DMP-BD10.  As the first player that Panasonic ever made, its price has been coming down considerably lately (though its also getting a little harder to find).  This doesn't mean its not a great player for anyone's needs, though, because it most certainly is.

In addition to blu-ray discs, this player supports standard DVD-Video, CDs, and homemade discs recording using AVCHD camcorders.   You should be sure and upgrade the firmware for this blu-ray player (while carefully following the directions), as that will greatly increase the load speeds of your movies (without that upgrade you're looking at close to 1 minute from the time you insert the disc to the time the menu pops up).

The picture quality for the Panasonic DMP BD10 is amazingly good for such an old blu-ray model (and yes, it has 1080p playback capability).  In fact, the difference in image quality to the playstation 3 was almost nil.  Vastly superior to other firsts (such as the two from Toshiba and the one from Samsung), this player also suffers from far fewer bugs and glitches than any other comparative model.

As far as the sound goes, its great!  It supports 7.1 channel audio in addition to newer audio formats such as the Dolby Digital+ .  While newer models should already be capable of decoding the latest audio codecs, you will have to download that firmware upgrade I mentioned earlier to make full use of your high resolution sound.  Thats not to say the sound won't be awesome without it, but it'll be amazing with it.  At the time it was made it was actually the only stand alone blu-ray disc player that had support for this high-def sound (that's since changed with newer models, of course).

All in all, the Panasonic DMP-BD10 is a good blu ray player for its current price.  It may have been too hefty of a purchase back when it first came out, but with the newer models coming out lately its price has dropped, and thats always good for those looking to buy.  Definitely worth the purchase now.

There are no new formatting wars on the horizon; Blu-ray will be “it” for a while. Blu-ray is a superior way to view movies, but the cost of players is still out of budget for many. The Blu-ray movies cost more than DVD’s and there is less of a selection (though that is quickly changing). Some TV’s don’t have the features to utilize the features of many Blu-ray players. These issues will all be changing in the future.

Those who recall the days when DVD players and movies were out of budget know the prices will come down on Blu-ray players and movies. The reasons this happens with all new technology:

The number of Blu-ray titles took a big jump in June when Warner Brothers decided to release its movies in Blu-ray. Once Toshiba stepped down from the format wars and chose to no longer develop, make or market HD DVD players and recorders, it increased the demand for Blu-ray titles and players. Until the war was over, many consumers didn’t want to invest in one of the formats to find out it would become outdated when the format wars were over. Now that Blu-ray has been declared the winner, consumers are ready to buy. As demand increases, so does competition, and prices begin to drop. This is really good news for consumers.

Manufacturers are ready to invest in producing a more affordable player. This will be another factor in the price of Blu-ray disc players coming down. A related product, the television, is being manufactured with features that are compatible with Blu-ray player features. These TV’s are increasing in number and their prices are also coming down.

The Blu-ray market and related technological advances are just beginning. Though it has been around for a few years, no one wanted to take the plunge until earlier this year when HD DVD no longer competed with Blu-ray. The future of Blu-ray is bright and on the verge of a tremendous and exploding growth.
